An actor normally has to become a whole new person to portray a character correctly. However, there are several celebrities in Hollywood that went above and beyond for their roles. Charlize Theron has transformed herself many times for movies. Matthew McConaughey even won an Oscar for ‘Dallas Buyers Club.’ Let’s discover more!
The ‘Jason Bourne’ franchise has always been considered one of Damon’s more important works, but there were several things about it that the actor did not like. It took a huge toll to become the star of an action film. He had to spend three hours at the gym every day, build an impressive amount of muscle, and look like he hated his life. Luckily, Damon eventually got a break for a role in ‘The Informant,’ where he ate a bunch of McDonald’s and Doritos.
Kidman has proven time and again that she is one of the greatest actresses of our generation, and she won an Academy Award in 2002 for her transformation in ‘The Hours.’ She plays the role of author Mrs. Dalloway and even wore a fake nose to look like her. It’s not easy to act with something on your face.

However, doing this can seriously affect your health. The actor lives with a chronic condition now, and he says that it’s because he didn’t take care properly.
Most people know about Theron’s amazing transformation for the film ‘Monster.’ She was 28 years old at the time and won an Oscar. However, she also gained a considerable amount of weight for ‘Tully,’ and it really took a toll on her. She was older, and it was much harder than before to lose those pounds afterward the film was finished.
‘Les Miserables’ is a classic musical, and Jackman played the role of Jean Valjean for the movie adaptation. However, he was coming off playing Wolverine and had to shed all those muscles and pounds to look like a miserable person suffering from famine. The actor would go almost two days without food and water to accomplish this goal. This caused some health issues and grumpiness on set, which Jackman apologized for later.
Tom Hardy is known for several amazing transformations throughout his career, and one of the best was the role of Bane for ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ However, as he gets older, Hardy has noticed that he cannot just lose and gain weight that easily. “If I keep putting on weight, I’ll collapse like a house of cards under too much pressure,” the actor revealed.
Just like Hardy, Christian Bale is another actor known as a chameleon in Hollywood. He lost 60 pounds for ‘The Machinist,’ as he had a horrible diet of vices to help. Afterward, the actor had to play Batman and had a high-calorie diet to return to his previous body. Later on, he played the role of Dick Cheney in ‘Vice’ and gained a ton more weight, but after seeing a nutritionist.
Jonah Hill was chubby when he starred in ‘Superbad’ and became a star, but he lost a ton of weight for personal reasons. However, the actor had to gain it back and more for ‘War Dogs.’ Afterward, Hill lost the weight again and got help from Channing Tatum, his co-star from ’21 Jump Street’.
Not a lot of people know that George Clooney also had to make some transformations for ‘Syriana’ because the actor always looks handsome. However, he gained 28 pounds in just a month for the role. However, it’s not that easy to gain that much weight in such a short time because you have to keep eating even if you’re full.
One of the most amazing recent transformations was Joaquin Phoenix in the film ‘Joker.’ The actor even won an Academy Award during the 2020 award season. Additionally, Phoenix said that such a drastic loss of weight (52 pounds) affects your mental health. “You start to go mad,” the actor said, which certainly helped play the part of Arthur Fleck.
This is another transformation that received an Academy Award. Matthew McConaughey played a man with a disease that is about to die and had to lose 47 pounds for the role. However, the actor consulted with a nutritionist to do everything right. “I gave myself four months to lose the weight. I had my programmed meals,” he said.
Just like Hugh Jackman, Anne had to change her body to play Fantine in ‘Les Miserables.’ This transformation got her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The actress lost 25 pounds but realized that it was a huge risk because most of it was shed in a 2-week period. She felt the effects of it on her mental health.
Rooney Mara’s transformation was a bit different from most of the actors on this list. She didn’t exactly have to change her body type, but she became a whole different-looking person for the David Fincher film. One of the weirdest things was the bleached eyebrows. “I just had to process, okay, this is what you look like now,” she said.
Swank also won an Academy Award for this role, and she had to train an insane amount to prepare correctly. “I was asked to gain 10 pounds of muscles, and I ended up gaining 19 pounds of muscle. But that’s my job as an actor,” the actress revealed. Swank was always rather slender but had to look like a professional boxer.
Jake Gyllenhaal also dropped a huge amount of weight for the movie ‘Nightcrawler’ in 2014. The actor lost 30 pounds to play the mysterious role of a crime scene videographer.
