Adopting a dog is one of the best things you can do in life. You’re giving a lovely creature a second chance at a home and discouraging the mistreatment of animals. However, Dan Tillery was almost sent to jail when he adopted Sir Wiggleton. It was for the most ridiculous reason, but the police did not want to acknowledge the truth. Let’s find out more!

ALWAYS WANTED A DOG

Dan Tillery lived in Waterford Township, Michigan, and worked as a musician. He and his girlfriend, Megan, had recently found their perfect new house, but they could finally get something that was missing in their lives. “My girlfriend and I have been wanting a dog forever, but the place we were renting would not allow dogs,” Dan explained. “We just recently purchased our first home. All ours. And dogs are allowed.” Would they find the one they wanted?

GOING TO A SHELTER

Having made the decision, they decided to go to the local shelter to give a loving home to a lucky dog. It was the Detroit Dog Rescue, and soon enough, they were interested in one cute American bulldog. Sadly, the poor puppy had been waiting for his forever home for 100 days already. He wouldn’t have to wait long…

SEEING THE PERFECT ONE

After seeing a picture of the pooch on the rescue’s Facebook page, they knew that he was the one. At the time, the Detroit Dog Rescue called him Sir Wiggleton. It was time to go through the process of adoption because it’s much better to adopt than to buy. But they never expected what would happen when Sir Wiggleton became theirs…

SHARING THE PICTURE

Tillery had an active social media presence, as most musicians do. Therefore, he started posting pictures of Diggy right away. One particularly goofy selfie caught the attention of the Detroit Dog Rescue. It was so cute and inspirational for other possible adopters that they decided to share on their Facebook page as well. Soon, it went viral…

BREAKING THE INTERNET

Usually, adoption stories end up going viral easily because the world needs more heartwarming tales, but this one was pretty special. The Detroit Dog Rescue posted a special selfie between Dan and Diggy captioned with, “We know this photo is going to break the Internet and we apologize, but we had to share. After almost 100 days in the shelter, Sir Wiggleton just got adopted. Sir Wiggleton and his new Dad are celebrating adoption day with huge smiles all around!” But the excitement would soon change…

SO EXCITED

Tillery and Megan were so happy that so many people connected with the site and liked the picture. It was proof that they had made a pretty great decision adopting Diggy. However, when it comes to the internet, attention is not always pleasant. Soon enough, Dan had some unexpected visitors that wanted him to get rid of his dog…

ENCOURAGING POST

The picture above was the first one Dan ever posted with Diggy, and it was also the one shared on the Detroit Dog Rescue’s Facebook page. The musician thought it was a great idea because happy stories encourage other people to adopt instead of buying from stores or breeders. All their intentions were good, but someone didn’t think it was right…

SUPPORTING A CAUSE

As an influencer, you hope that your posts on social media promote more than just your work. Dan believes that adoption is the best option because there are so many animals waiting for their forever homes. The post was supposed to be joyful, but it turned into something bad. Some people were concerned with Diggy’s breed…

BAD REPUTATION

Because of the attacks were committed by pit bulls, they have been cataloged as a dangerous breed. Some places around the world have laws that prohibit people from owning them at all. However, those laws don’t take into account that many of them are just fun, loving dogs that deserve a second chance. So, who came to Dan’s door?

PROBLEMS WITH THE LAW

When Dan’s post went viral, the police department at the Waterfront Township took notice. That’s why officers showed up suddenly to Dan and Megan’s house. Unfortunately, they had to tell the musician that it was against the law to own a pit bull in their city. They couldn’t even have a pit bull mix. He had a decision to make…

NOT ALLOWED

Although the cops clearly saw that Diggy was a loving dog, they told him that everyone had to follow the law. It seems crazy that Dan and his girlfriend were finally in a position to adopt a dog, and suddenly, they were told that they couldn’t have their chosen one. It was a heartbreaking situation. No one could possibly return Diggy to the shelter! Was there a solution?

AN AMERICAN BULLDOG

The papers clearly stated Diggy’s breed, which was not "pit bull" at all, but the authorities did not believe it. All they could say was that the dog looked like a pit bull and that was it. Therefore, they would still hold Dan responsible if he did not return it to the shelter. In fact, they told him that he had three days to take him back. Could that be it?

FOLLOWING THE LAW

While it was the viral post that initially brought Dan this problem, it was also what saved them. Animals lovers started condemning the police’s decision. Animal rights groups also joined the fight to change the officer’s minds. However, the Department Chief stated, “From our standpoint, it’s a pretty clear case of an ordinance that makes it clear what’s permissible and what’s not. Our job is to enforce the ordinance.” So, Dan might be facing jail time…

GOING TO COURT?

Everyone following Dan and Diggy’s story got mad at the response from authorities. He shouldn’t have to give up his best buddy. So, they decided to make an online petition so that it wouldn’t happen. At the same time, the musician was looking for a legal way out of this situation. Nothing was out of the question, even if he had to go to court…

TRYING TO CHANGE THE LAW

The great part about this petition is that it broadened beyond Dan and Diggy. They didn’t just want to stop their problems, but they wanted the town to dismiss the law that prohibited pit bulls. If that happened, Tillery would not have to prove that Diggy was another breed at all. Additionally, it would allow other people in the area the option of getting a wonderful dog. But in the meantime, Dan was not giving up…

NEVER GIVE UP

In one of his posts about this issue, Dan wrote, “My lawyer and I are going to do everything possible to make sure Diggy stays in his home with us, his family. Thanks for all of your support, guys. I’m not a quitter.” It seems that people really loved this story, especially because Diggy was so important to him and Megan. Did the petition work?

TIME FOR THE COURTS TO DECIDE

Things got pretty stressful for Tillery. He just couldn’t believe that he could get in trouble and possibly lose his buddy even if Diggy was not really a pit bull. The best thing to do was to leave the decision to the proper authorities. The police, Dan, and the courts had many discussions. They finally came to a decision…

WINNING THE BATTLE

The case was dismissed, and Dan would get to keep Diggy forever. As soon as he heard, Tillery took to Facebook and updated everyone. He also wrote, “We get to keep our boy. He’s a good boy.” Furthermore, regarding this case, the township decided to change the law against pit bulls. It would not be completely removed, but they would take a different approach next time. What else do we know about Dan and Diggy?

DIGGY IS AN INFLUENCER!

The musician became really popular thanks to his story. You can check out his Facebook and Instagram, where he shares all kinds of pictures of his dogs, Megan, and himself. However, everyone knows that Diggy is the real star of his social media. He appears in most of Dan’s pictures and continues to be an important part of their family.
